Answers to the most common questions about UPSC and Civil Services preparation at Centre for Ambition.
Detailed answers to questions from students and parents about our courses, admission, and Civil Services preparation.
The UPSC Civil Services Examination is India's most prestigious competitive examination, through which candidates are selected for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and over 20 other Central and All India Services. The exam consists of three stages: Prelims, Mains, and the Personality Test (Interview).
General category candidates get 6 attempts (up to age 32). OBC candidates get 9 attempts (up to age 35). SC/ST candidates have unlimited attempts (up to age 37). PwBD candidates get 9 attempts (up to age 42). Every attempt counts, so it is important to prepare thoroughly before appearing.
UPSC Prelims has two papers: Paper 1 — General Studies (200 marks, 100 questions) and Paper 2 — CSAT (200 marks, qualifying nature). A minimum of 33% (66 marks) is required in CSAT. The final Prelims merit list is based on GS Paper 1 marks only.

Effective IAS preparation involves: (1) building a strong foundation with NCERT books, (2) studying standard reference books, (3) daily newspaper reading and analysis (The Hindu / Indian Express), (4) maintaining current affairs notes, (5) practising answer writing regularly, (6) solving previous year papers, and (7) taking regular mock tests. At Centre for Ambition, all of these elements are systematically integrated into the course.
Initially, 6–8 focused hours per day is sufficient. As the exam approaches, this can be increased to 10–12 hours. Quality of study matters more than quantity — focused sessions with proper breaks are more effective. Time management is also taught as part of our programme.
To improve answer writing: (1) practise writing at least one answer daily, (2) write strong introductions and conclusions, (3) use diagrams and flowcharts where appropriate, (4) respect word limits, and (5) develop a multidimensional approach to questions. Our Mains Answer Writing Programme provides daily practice with faculty evaluation.
Coaching is not mandatory, but structured guidance greatly helps. At Centre for Ambition, students benefit from experienced faculty, a proven study curriculum, regular tests, and peer learning in a focused environment. For a highly competitive exam like UPSC, this structured approach is considerably more efficient than self-study alone.
